    The Physiotherapy department of National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (Divyangjan), Kolkata is a premier physiotherapy setup in India with state of the art equipments backed by some of the most research intensive environment with numerous of publications every year.

    Physiotherapy:

    Physiotherapy Professional is a person who practices physiotherapy by undertaking comprehensive examination and appropriate investigation, provides treatment and advice to any persons preparatory to or for the purpose of or in connection with movement or functional dysfunction, malfunction, disorder, disability, healing and pain from trauma and disease, using physical modalities including exercise, mobilization, manipulations, electrical and thermal agents and other electro therapeutics for prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, health promotion and fitness. The physiotherapist can practice independently or as a part of a multi-disciplinary team and has a minimum qualification of a baccalaureate degree (NCAHP, Gazette of India dated March 28, 2021)Physiotherapists provide services that develop, maintain and restore people’s maximum movement, functional ability and maximize their quality of life. They can help people at any stage of life, when movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, diseases, disorders, conditions or environmental factors.

     

    Objectives:

    •  To develop manpower in the field of rehabilitation by undertaking long term program of 2 years MPT, 4 ½ years BPT course and short term courses for qualified therapists and other health and rehabilitation professionals.
    • To evaluate, assess, plan and execute physical therapy treatment to patients attending the department.
    • To offer education, training, work-adjustment and such other rehabilitation services as the society may deem fit to disabled persons with associated problems.
    • To undertake Research and Developmental activities.

    1. Academic Activity:

    Long-term courses:

    • Masters degree course in Physiotherapy (Orthopaedics and Neurology) of 2 years duration with intake capacity of 7 in MPT-Orthopaedics and 03 in MPT-Neurology. The minimum educational qualification for admission is 50% marks in BPT. Course is affiliated to The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
    • Bachelors degree course in Physiotherapy (BPT) of 4½ years duration with intake capacity of 57 candidates. This course is affiliated to The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Apart from classroom lectures, clinical and practical demonstrations, regular seminars, case presentations,  journal   discussions,  etc. are also arranged for BPT students, interns & MPT students after   completing   their   B.P.T.   course    are successfully placed in different hospitals / Institutes / Rehabilitation centers / NGO within the country and abroad.

    2. Clinical Physiotherapy Services:

    The department of P.T. renders services to both out and in patients. Patients are allotted to therapists who evaluate, assess and plan out the treatment and execute the therapy. Special attention is given to complicated cases through the departmental clinical meetings.

    Electrotherapy –

    Department is equipped with ultramodern equipments. Following Services are provided in the Electrotherapy Unit: LASER, Microwave Diathermy, Shockwave Therapy, EMG-Biofeedback, Ultrasound, Cryotherapy, Multi-current including Microcurrent, SWD & Pulsed SWD, Electrical stimulation, Interferential therapy, TENS, Traction – Lumbar & Cervical.
